“Realm of the Canvas”
2020
35 x 42 x 4 mm; 35 x 42 x 4 mm
Silver (Ag 925 and Ag 999), steel
These brooch pairs emerge from a profound dialogue with Mark Rothko's philosophy of art—where rectangular forms become portals to emotional truth. Taking inspiration from Rothko's belief that art should communicate the fundamental human emotions of "tragedy, ecstasy, and doom," these pieces transpose his contemplative visual language into wearable forms.
"Realm of Canvas," juxtaposes textural opposites—one brooch featuring a dark oxidized surface punctuated by empty stone settings, the other presenting a luminous, hammered silver plane. These vacant settings create a constellation of absences, negative spaces that invite the viewer to fill them with imagination rather than literal gems. This deliberate omission echoes Rothko's resistance to representational elements, focusing instead on the power of absence and presence. The textural dialogue between the two pieces reflects Rothko's exploration of boundaries and thresholds, where distinct elements vibrate against one another to create emotional resonance.
What began as an investigation into Rothko's textual ideas unexpectedly led to adopting the "painting" format in jewelry—rectangular planes that, like Rothko's canvases, become windows into emotional states rather than mere decorative objects. These brooches function as portable contemplative spaces, inviting moments of quiet reflection within the context of everyday adornment.
Each piece honors Rothko's commitment to creating art that stands outside of time—work that speaks directly to human consciousness through formal elements rather than narrative or representation. In translating Rothko's painterly concerns to the metalsmith's vocabulary, these brooches seek not to illustrate his paintings but to extend his philosophical inquiry into the realm of the wearable.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1990, Rasma Pušpure's journey in art began with a strong foundation, graduating from the Riga School of Design and Art before earning her Bachelor’s degree in 2014 and Master’s degree in 2016 from the Art Academy of Latvia’s Metal Design Department. Today, she serves as the Head of the Metal Design Department at the Art Academy of Latvia, a position she has held since 2021.
Rasma’s work explores the intersection of human interaction, experience, and meaningful connections. Driven by a desire to gain new perspectives, she has participated in several Artist-in-Residency programs, including Fiskars AiR in Finland (2016), Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France (2019), and Arteles Creative Centre in Finland (2023). Her creative process often begins with questioning the world around her, drawing inspiration from the concepts of slow living and sustainability. Rasam is passionate about ethical practices in design and always carefully selects materials for her works, considering their environmental impact, no matter how small.
Her designs embody a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to creating art with integrity. The aesthetics of her work are rooted in pure, basic forms that provide a framework or space through their lines. One of the key themes in Rasam’s pieces is the fusion of opposites and contrasts, where the material itself and its inherent semantics are central to the meaning of each creation.
As Rasma describes her artistic philosophy: “I generally work with the idea of a memory, or the memory of an idea. It is in the way it happens that I find inspiration from. For me, this recollection occurs within the contradiction of filling an absence that can’t be filled any other way than by recreating in new visual and tangible forms. With my work, I try to keep track of things and memories that can no longer be kept, but in this way, I can hold on to them. I don’t see memory as an accurate recollection of events; rather, a selective process of preserving.”
The silver brooches, crafted with the same thoughtfulness and reflection that defines Rasma's work, invites you to explore the beauty of memory, absence, and the fusion of contrasts—a true representation of her artistic journey and vision.
